Underground Railroad and
other Historical Activities
The Underground Railroad in Clark and Floyd
counties and Louisville are just a few of the strands that
weave our rich tapestry of local history. Indiana was a
free state but Louisville actually had several auction blocks.
Jeffersonville is now the first leg of the Indiana
Freedom Trails. Ask the innkeeper for more info on the underground railroad.
There are many historical points of interest in Jeffersonville
and surrounding areas, including the inn itself (see our
history page) but the
Howard Steamboat Museum is a must see. This grand Victorian
mansion is the Howard Home, the builders of the Howard
shipyards, now know as Jeff Boat, a major employer in this
area.
Built in the 1880's the mansion is high Victorian and sits in
a beautiful park like setting surrounded by a brick fence with
many lovely flowers beds, a fountain and a carriage house that
has been renovated to house activities such as the antique
show in May during their annual Chautauqua.
The Howard's Steamboat Museum is one of Jeffersonville's
treasures that you can enjoy while staying at the Old Bridge
Inn. Free passes upon request only. One
complimentary package per visit.
Bird Watching
The gardens are home to
doves, wrens, robins, cardinals and mocking birds. There are
many berry laden shrubs in the gardens to feed the birds plus
they love to eat out of the bird feeders that we supply for
them. Nearby on the river see the Great blue heron and
turkey vultures. Flocks of ducks and geese make the
waterfront their home all year.

our comfortable parlor, dinning room or in the privacy of your room. $15 per

Permanent Exhibit - Ordinary People, Extraordinary Courage: Men and Women of the Underground Railroad in the Indiana and Kentucky Borderland - Carnegie Center for Art and History in New Albany. This exhibit examines the nature of the antislavery community in Floyd County, Indiana, and places it in a regional and national context by describing the social, economic and cultural contours of the Falls region of the Ohio River Valley. Based on the book by Pamela Peters titled The Underground Railroad in Floyd County (North Carolina, 2001), the project contributes to the work by scholars such as Dr. Blaine Hudson at the University of Louisville, whose ongoing re-evaluation of the abolitionist movement has led to increased interest in the Underground Railroad. 201 E.
